Gift Ideas: 5 Practical Engagement Gifts For Your Sister

Oh my sister is getting married! Seriously!!

You might have fought for silly things over the years; you might have competed for your parents’ attention, you might have spent endless nights talking about the wedding day. Whatever your relationship is with your sister, now she is engaged and that’s a HUGE deal for her.

In case you are not aware how large the deal is, we have gathered great information about engagement below. Don’t worry, we haven’t forgot about the gift ideas. That will come shortly after the educational stuff.

What is engagement & why engagement gift for sister is required?

The act of engagement is essentially a promise to wed, which can take anywhere from a few weeks, to a few months, and in some cases even years. Engagements are still special events though, and no matter how long it will be before they eventually tie the knot, its due cause for a celebration.

This is just a word of advice: engagements don’t call for gift giving, but if your sister is the one who got engaged, she’d expect you to at least treat her to a fun day out to just rejoice with her in this happy time in her life.

So where do the origins of engagement lie?

When you look at the European origins, it dates back all the way to the Jewish Law in the time of Abraham, where the act of marriage was seen as a “two step” program. There was the Erusin, which was the sanctification (or betrothal) ceremony and after that, the Chupah would follow, which was the actual legal part of the wedding.

The people from Ancient Greece later also adapted this ceremony and called it Gamos and Engeysis, although the “contracts that they used were not written, but only verbal to one another in front of a crowd of witnesses.

An Interesting fact about betrothal and engagement?

Even in modern times, betrothal and engagement in Judaism are two very different things and breaking a betrothal requires actually getting divorced, and violation a betrothal is considered adultery.

Another weird fact:

In some cultures around the world, betrothal was seen as a sort of “trial marriage”, where actually getting legally married would only be necessary once a child was conceived. The betrothal time would also traditionally be the preparation stage before marriage where the groom would build a house and get ready to be able to provide for his wife and prove that he was “man enough” for the role.

The history of engagement in the Orthodox Church:

The Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches used to perform the engagement ceremony in the entranceway of the church, marking it as the first steps the couple took together in the church, and as soon-to-be-wed entity. There’s a whole lot of blessing and ring exchanging that takes place and this ceremony was super sacred, marking the official start of the engagement period.

In ancient times this ceremony would be performed as soon as the engagement was announced, but in modern days, this happens right before the actual wedding ceremony. In the Eastern churches, rings are only given at the betrothal ceremony, and not at the wedding ceremony.

The Roman Catholic Church…

Ancient times saw no difference between betrothal and being legally wed in the Roman Catholic Church. Getting engaged to someone was as binding as actually marrying him and to end the betrothal meant you had to get divorced.

Luckily with new times, come new rules and new terms of engagement…But as they say different strokes for different folks. Some cultures still have very strict rules and regulations that come to play when a couple gets engaged.

The history of engagements really shows you that saying “I will” to someone is a very big deal.
