It is no secret that cargo pants are not the most elegant piece of clothing, yet many women and men a like love wearing them. Originally worn as utility clothing, today their use extended beyond providing comfort as they slowly began being worn by anyone who enjoys being comfortable but stylish.
But, what are cargo pants? They are a pair of pants with a large fit and that have cargo pockets on the legs which is where the name came from. A cargo pocket is one that looks like a patch and has side fold-ins like an accordion to offer more storage room. They have been created for the British Army at the end of 1930s with the purpose of carrying more ammo and other needed objects, in a more comfortable way. The cargo pants are sewn in such a way that allows easier bending of the knees.
History of Women’s cargo pants
Women’s cargo pants don’t differ much from men’s cargos, except they are a little smaller in size. Cargo pants made their way in the US back in the 1940s and on the runways, in the 1990s. These days they are not as popular, but there are many women who like them and wear them on a more or less regular basis. Since they were originally made for the army, they’re made of a very resistant fabric, usually cotton. These days fast drying fabrics are also used for cargo pants, but this means they’re not made of pure cotton anymore.
One should not confuse the women’s cargo pants with the khakis nor with the chinos, although their appearance is similar. The khakis are colored various shade of khaki which literally means “soil” in Persian. The khaki pants don’t necessarily have the large extra pockets. Today the term usually refers to pants that are made in the style and of the fabric they were first introduced even though their color is different. A similar type of pants is the chinos, made of a twill fabric. It is not quite clear where the name originated from, but it seems to mean the pants were made in China. The word chino might be used interchangeably with khakis when talking about the pants and not the color.
A variation of the women’s cargo pantsare the short women’s cargo pants. The short cargo pants can be made this way or the regular pants have a zip above the knee to allow the wearer to change the length of their pants as needed.
The ladies should not be afraid of wearing women’s cargo pants while camping or while traveling to a different city or country. If you have a garden with vegetables, wearing these pants will be more comfortable and your legs will be protected against insect bites. Because of their introduction on the fashion scene women’s cargo pants have been adapted to look more casual and thus allowing their wear almost on a daily basis. Depending on their cut, ladies can wear these pants to hide parts of their bodies that they find less attractive, such as some thicker legs.
